Sri Lanka are in a comfortable position as they scored 258/4 at stumps on Day 1 against Bangladesh in the first Test at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Sunday.
Angelo Mathews was key for the visitors, hitting his 12th century, which kept Sri Lanka in a position of dominance. He was batting on 114 at stumps with Dinesh Chandimal on 34.
The duo so far added 75-run for the undefeated fifth wicket stand, frustrating Bangladesh bowlers in a pitch that looked pretty flat.
Kusal Mendis scored 54 and accompanied Mathews in a 92-run partnership for the third wicket stand, which set the tune eventually.
Sri Lanka will be pretty pleased with Day 1 of this Test match. After winning the toss, the visitors lost their captain – Karunaratne very early in the day. But Mendis and Oshada had a decent partnership after that. Oshada failed to convert the start he got off to, but Mendis and Mathews had an even better partnership in the post-lunch session.
Mendis departed after notching up his fifty, but Mathews continued to motor along as he brought up a fantastic century. The visitors lost a couple of wickets after tea, but Chandimal walked in next and steadied the innings along with Mathews.
For Bangladesh, off spinner Nayeem Hasan, playing his first Test since February last year, remains Bangladesh’s most successful bowler on day one with 2-71. Shakib al Hasan was impressive too as he got a wicket and was economical at the same time. Sri Lankan batters will try to post a big total on Monday as they are in a very good position.
